What Do I Need For My Own Home Theater?

Written By: Hilary on May 1, 2009 2 Comments

home-theater-u-couch_400TV and DVD watching can be fun, for sure. But imagine upping the ante a bit and giving you maximum viewing pleasure both in high-definition quality picture and in ambience. You can either hit the cinemas or take the cinemas to your home but putting together your own home theater system. While it is not without cost, it is most definitely a practicable and doable project. But first things first, you need to figure out what it is you need for this entertainment endeavor. The key really lies in pairing high-definition picture with engaging sound—preferably a good surround sound system.

Better sound quality

In building your own home theater, sound is utterly important. You have two choices when it comes to surround sound. You can either build your own system out of separate components or choose a pre-packaged system which is easy to set up and can deliver an engaging sound. However, with a component system, you’ll naturally enjoy higher-quality construction and better audio performance.

TV

You might want to consider if your 10-year old TV set is now ready to be replaced with a nicer one. Canvas around for a TV set that can give you high-resolution picture that HDTV can. There are many digital sets that show stunning picture and may fall well within your budget.

DVD player/ Blu-ray Disc player

A DVD player is quite possibly the most common source of home theater audio and video, as most DVDs offer high-quality images and digital surround sound. A good home theater relies on sharp, colorful video and Dolby® Digital-encoded audio. There are also other home theater sources that have HDTV programming which delivers high-resolution video and digital audio.

Home Theater Receiver

A home theater receiver acts as the control center for audio; it processes audio signals, amplifies them, and sends them to your speakers. There are a lot of receivers being sold today that can enable you to hear TV, CDs and VHS in surround sound. The great thing too, about a receiver is that it can simplify your video and audio management. It’s a great alternative should you wish to plug in multiple sources, like a cable box, a DVD player, and a video game console to your home theater system. So if you want to watch a DVD or play a video game, it just takes a press of a button on your receiver’s remote to switch to the right inputs, without having to manually switch inputs on your TV.

Speakers and a Subwoofer

In order to achieve a full sound, you will need a subwoofer and at least 4 voice-matched speakers (make sure that if you do decide to buy the speakers, you buy them from the same family or maker). But if you buy a pre-assembled system, you won’t have to worry about voice-matching. Some people buy about 7 speakers because it lets them hear more channels of surround sound.

Cables, Power Protection, Universal Remote Control

Obviously with all that’s going into your home theater system, there will be a lot of cables needed. You may already have most, if not all, the cables needed but keep in mind that the quality of your speakers’ sound can also be affected by the quality of your cables. Check to see that you aren’t using low-standard cables that will only give you low-quality sound. With your home theater put together, you will want to make sure that all your hard work and investment don’t go to waste. Use a power protection unit to protect your system from power surges and lightning strikes. It’s an investment worth protecting.

It is also wise to get a good universal remote that is easy to understand. It will minimize the clutter that 3 or 4 separate remote controls could cause. At least with a universal remote, you only need to mind one item instead of several. Forget diving under the couch to see if you’ve lost your remote there.

Audio/Video Furniture

You might want to consider if you need some speaker brackets or shelving units for your home theater system. You don’t want to end up just stacking them on the corner of your living room with your speakers scattered all over and wires sprawled across the room. Strategic placing could also help with your sound in as much as the aesthetic aspect of your home theater system.
